POROS. From the Belly of the Whale I’ve Been Delivered. 1996-1999
Site specific multimedia project.
At the entrance of a 1840 Jewish Synagogue, a 5 ton boulder from the nearby quarry (geologically similar to the stone used in the building) is aligned on the axis that connects it to the town’s square so that a 1meter long perforation (drilled in the quarry) becomes the pin-hole of a Camera Obscura. The visitor can look through the elongated aperture into the center of the building marked by a red plumb line suspended from the ceiling like a pendulum. All the surviving architectural features of the interior of the building have been meticulously retraced with multicolored thread creating a three dimensional architectural drawing which provides a backdrop to the audio part of a video work presented in a nearby gallery alongside a 60 foot long scroll drawing documenting the project.
On the day of the opening, an almond tree is planted in the garden directing the visitor’s gaze outwards towards the town’s square, and symbolically inaugurating the building as the new cultural center of the town.
